What Is an EV?
An electric vehicle is designed to help cut the emissions from standard internal combustion engines by bolstering efficiency with an added electric motor. EVs come in four categories. We’ll go over them here, so you know what you’re looking for:
- Hybrid: A regular hybrid vehicle has an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. It relies mostly on the engine for power, with the motor as a backup.
- Plug-In Hybrid: A plug-in hybrid vehicle also has both an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. However, the electric motor takes front and center, with the gas engine as backup.
- Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles: These vehicles take a rich hydrogen fuel and convert it into energy, producing no emissions but water vapor instead.
