Does an Electric Vehicle Need Routine Maintenance?

Electric Vehicle

One popular reason why drivers flock to electric vehicles is because they produce zero tailpipe emissions. This can help eliminate up to 4.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide per vehicle per year. The reason why there are no emissions created with an EV is because the internal combustion engine is eliminated. In the place of an engine is a rechargeable battery and an electric motor.

Since there is no engine, EVs eliminate the need for services like oil changes and engine tune-ups. However, EVs still require routine service to ensure it is well maintained.

Familiar services like brake service, tire rotations, and wiper blade replacements still must be performed at regular intervals. Your EV will also require unique services—such as perform a fluid check for the battery coolant, inspect of the power inverter, and check the charger modules—to ensure a seamless commute each time you take the wheel.

How to Maintain an EV Battery

It’s important to follow manufacturer-recommended guidelines to ensure the battery of your EV is properly maintained. Check out some of these recommendations to help keep the battery in peak condition for the long haul…

  • Be mindful of charging: There’s a reason why the estimated charge time for many vehicles stops at 80%. That’s because it’s best to avoid charging past that point since it can put extra strain on the battery.
  • Monitor the weather: Extreme temperatures on either side of the spectrum can cause the battery to reduce its driving range by up to 40%. Whenever possible, it’s always best to park your EV in the garage.
  • Use the appropriate charger: While it’s tempting to use a DC Fast Charger due to its ability to charge your vehicle in the blink of an eye, this rapid charge could cause long-term issues. It’s recommended to use an at-home charger as often as possible.

By following these tips, you’ll likely notice your EV’s battery maintains its condition for as long as possible.

Can My EV Handle a Road Trip?

Electric Vehicle

Absolutely! In fact, thanks to the thousands of charging stations found around the nation, planning a road trip is easy.

It’s important to note that there are several factors that can adjust your vehicle’s driving range, so the range you get at home will likely be different than the range you experience while on the road trip. It’s best to map out various charging stations prior to your road trip.

You’ll also want to regularly perform vehicle checks while on the road trip. This includes a visual inspection of the tires to check for cracks, bulges, and that they’re at the correct PSI. You’ll also want to regularly check the wiper blades and windshield to ensure your EV is properly maintained and ready to embark on the next leg of the trip.
