Toyota 4Runner vs Jeep Wrangler: Handling Tough Terrain

Toyota 4Runner vs Jeep Wrangler Off RoadThough one may think that the Jeep Wrangler has a leg up on performance, the truth is that the 2021 Toyota 4Runner keeps up with the Jeep. In fact, the 4Runner comes with a host of available performance features that improve handling on nearly any terrain.

For example, the model offers the available Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS), which assists in extreme off-road terrain situations. It automatically decouples the sway bars to improve wheel articulation. When you’ve reached a smoother and flatter road, the sway bars automatically reconnect.

Though the Wrangler does have 4x4 systems to choose from, the 4Runner offers 4x4 systems plus the optional one-size fits-all Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) system.

This system optimizes traction so your tires stay planted firmly on the ground. Drivers can choose from four terrain modes and the system will automatically adjust the engine throttle for ultimate control.

The 4Runner matches the Wrangler and its available Tru-Lok® Electronic Locking Differentials with its own optional electronically controlled locking rear differential. You can also add available Crawl Control so you can dominate steep inclines.

Toyota 4Runner vs Jeep Wrangler: Interior Cabin

Toyota 4Runner vs Jeep Wrangler InteriorAt most, the Jeep Wrangler can seat up to five passengers at a time. The 4Runner on the other hand, comes standard with five seats, plus the option to add a third row of seating. This increases the seating capacity to fit seven inside.

This makes the model a perfect fit for growing families. Plus, it has an additional 23.4 inches of exterior length compared to the standard Wrangler. This allows the model to be both adult- and kid-friendly.

You and your co-pilot will appreciate the many seat options, and with a maximum of 57.8 inches of first-row shoulder room (the Wrangler only provides 55.7 inches), you’re sure to enjoy your personal space.

Plus, the 4Runner goes above and beyond for your cargo storage. Behind its front row, drivers can access up to 89.7 cubic feet of space for your luggage, bags, groceries, equipment, and more. The maximum for the Wrangler is a mild 72.4 cubic feet.

Toyota 4Runner vs Jeep Wrangler: Technology for All

Toyota 4Runner vs Jeep WranglerTalk about staying connected. Both models have their fair share of technology, however, the 4Runner provides the most standard and available features for its drivers.

For example, its base model comes standard with:

  • 8-inch touchscreen
  • 8-speaker audio system
  • Android Auto™, Apple CarPlay®, and Amazon Alexa compatibility
  • Advanced voice recognition
  • Bluetooth® wireless technology

The Wrangler does have a few things in common, such as the standard 8-speaker audio system, AM/FM radio, and voice recognition, however, it does not offer anything comparable to the 4Runner’s available 15-speaker JBL® audio system. This system includes a subwoofer and amplifier to add a bit more bass to your road playlist. The most speakers you can get in the Wrangler are nine.
