The History of the Hendricks County Museum
Built in 1866, the Hendricks County Museum began its life as the county jail where it served the community for over 100 years. It wasn’t until 1974 when the county jail was converted into the Hendricks County Museum where it now records some of the local stories that have happened over the years.
Whether you’re looking to reconnect with the past or maybe you’re interested in finding out more about the heritage of Hendricks County residents, this is a great place to start. The people here work hard to keep a comprehensive collection of local artifacts and there are excellent tours that will show you everything they have to offer.
Available Collections and Exhibits
You’ll find a ton of fantastic historic records right in this museum with all sorts of documents and artifacts donated to the museum. There are marriage licenses dating back all the way to 1865 along with a variety of family collections documenting the lives of people in the area.
In addition to that, every effort was made to preserve the history of the building itself with a wide number of rooms that have been accurately recreated with historical accuracy. You can come to explore the Old Jail room or take a look at the Sheriff’s Office. There is even a Military Room which displays some of the historic military garb used in wars since the building’s construction.
