2021 Toyota Highlander Gas Mileage & Engine Specs

Toyota HighlanderThere are two possible engines for the 2021 Highlander—each one able to fit in with your particular sensibilities and lifestyle needs.

First we have a standard gasoline 3.5-liter V6 engine that can generate up to 295 horsepower and 263 lb-ft of torque. When equipped with front-wheel drive, you get an EPA-estimated 21 city MPG and 29 highway MPG.1 With all-wheel drive, the SUV has an EPA-estimated 20 city MPG and 27 highway MPG.1

For enhanced fuel economy, you can choose the available 2.5L hybrid engine. This powertrain is designed to sip fuel with the use of an electric motor working alongside it. You can expect 243 net horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque out of this engine. Not only that, but you’ll also have up to an EPA-estimated 36 city MPG and 35 highway MPG.1

For extra help with fuel economy, the 2021 Toyota Highlander is available with a Stop and Start Engine System. It works to conserve gas by shutting the engine off when the vehicle is at a complete stop. The second you take your foot off the brake pedal, this feature turns the engine right back on again.

Transmission Technology

Having a solid transmission is key if you want to make sure your vehicle isn’t consuming too much fuel. That’s why this vehicle is designed with a standard 8-speed automatic transmission. This technology will provide you with loads of gears to work with that will help to keep your RPMs down when you’re getting up to speed on the highway.

If you choose the hybrid engine, you’ll upgrade your vehicle with an available Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). This technology is designed without gears and instead provides you with a spectrum of shift points. The result is smooth acceleration every time that offers the shift point that’s suited just right for your performance needs.

Drivetrain Capabilities

Toyota HighlanderHaving the right drivetrain is important when you’re trying to save fuel. Drivers will start with a standard front-wheel drive system that provides you with solid traction on clear roads. Thanks to the lightweight design of this system, you’ll keep your fuel consumption low.

If you need more traction, though, a great option is to look to all-wheel drive. This technology will provide you with torque to all four of your wheels, so you can have much greater control in the snow. However, since this this drivetrain uses more power from your engine, you’ll consume more fuel.

For greater control over your vehicle, this SUV can be upgraded with an available Electronic
On-Demand All-Wheel Drive system. This technology is designed to let you turn your all-wheel drive on and off as you see fit. If you’re driving on a clear road, you can set your vehicle to run in front-wheel drive, so you save as much fuel as possible.

Standard Multi-Information Display

When you want to make sure your you have your finger on the pulse of your vehicle’s needs, you’ll have the help of your Multi-Information Display. This screen will provide you with all the information you need on your fuel efficiency. Some of the information you’ll have to work with includes:

  • Current/Average Fuel Economy
  • Cruising Range
  • ECO Driving Indicator
  • Energy Monitor

Reassuring Safety Features

Toyota HighlanderAside from the performance of the vehicle itself, the Highlander provides an abundance of attributes when it comes to safety. One of the chief highlights here would be Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.5+. This advanced set of active safety features provides you with automated technology that can help keep you out of collisions, such as:

  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
  • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Lane Departure Alert
  • Automatic High Beams
  • Lane Tracing Assist
  • Road Sign Assist

To help you out when traffic gets busy, you’ll have the help of a Blind Spot Warning indicator. This technology will provide you with a warning if a vehicle is riding alongside you in your blind spot. Just pay attention to your side mirrors, and you’ll see a warning light if your vehicle detects another car.

Aerodynamic Design

In order to save as much fuel as possible, what really makes this vehicle special is its aerodynamic design. Your engine has to work hard in order to counteract the effects of wind resistance. With a body that’s able to cut through the air with ease, you’ll be able to accelerate quickly without making your engine work harder than it needs to.

With the sleek curves of the Toyota Highlander, you’ll be able to move down the highway with ease. Not only that, but it also means you’ll save fuel while on the highway, so you can road trip like a pro.

Fuel Saving Tips

When you want to make sure you’re sipping fuel for as long as possible, you’ll want to make sure you’re paying attention to your driving style. Luckily, there are several ways you can improve your fuel economy by simply adjusting how you drive. Some of the tips include:

  • Avoid pressing hard on the gas pedal for rapid acceleration
  • Don’t press hard on your brakes if possible
  • Keep your tire pressure up
  • Keep up with your vehicle’s maintenance
