When to Change Engine Coolant

Most internal combustion engines require fluid to stay cool. Without it, the vehicle will overheat, and the engine can seize. This can be both inconvenient, and incredibly expensive. These Signs Suggest It’s Time for an Engine Flush

Typically, your vehicle’s factory maintenance schedule should include intervals for fluid changes of flushes. If your vehicle is older, or you suspect it may be ready for a change sooner than the manual suggests, there are a few things to look for:

• Check the levels. Fluid evaporates over time. This is normal. Remove the cap and check the overflow tank when the engine is cold to see if the fluid reaches the “cold” If it does not, add a premixed solution of distilled water and antifreeze until it does.
• Inspect the color. Place a clear container beneath the drain and allow some of the radiator fluid to fill it. If it looks clean, you’re probably in good shape. If it has debris or rust in it, it’s time for a flush.
• Look at the cooling tubes. When you drain the fluid off to inspect it, look inside the radiator and inspect the cooling tubes. If they look plugged, or you can see debris, the radiator needs to be flushed.
• Watch your gauges. If your vehicle seems to be heating up as you drive, your cooling system may be blocked and unable to cool the car properly. Flushing it out and replacing the fluid may fix that.
