Warning Lights

We can generally boil down dashboard lights to two different types—warning lights and indicators. Warning lights are meant to notify you of a potential malfunction within your vehicle and when one of these comes on, it’s best to make your way to a service center soon.

Check Engine Light

Highlander Check Engine LightLikely the most common warning light you’ll see is the Check Engine light. This is a very general warning light that indicates a malfunction within the engine system. It will look like an engine block with the word “CHECK” underneath.

Unlike many other warning lights, the Check Engine light doesn’t typically require immediate attention. If you see a Check Engine light come onto your dashboard, make it a priority to see a technician, but there’s no need to pull over and call a tow truck.

Brake System Warning Light

One system warning light you should pay attention to is your Brake System Warning light. This will come on as the word “BRAKE” and it means there’s a malfunction within your brake system. Sometimes it can indicate that your brake fluid is low, but it’s best not to drive with this on in the event that your brake system doesn’t work.

Electric Power Steering System Warning Light

Highlander Power Steering System Warning LightIf you see a light that looks like a steering wheel with an exclamation mark next to it, that’s your Electric Power Steering System Warning light. This means that your power steering system isn’t working properly and can affect the way your steering handles. Make a trip to a service center as soon as possible if this light comes on.

Indicators

Next, we have indicators—these are lights that are telling you when a specific system has been turned on. Don’t look at these as warnings, they’re simply keeping you informed on your vehicle’s systems.

Blind Spot Monitor Indicator

If your Toyota Highlander is equipped with a Blind Spot Monitor, you’ll likely have seen this light. This indicator is meant to tell you when your Blind Spot Monitor system is on and it’ll appear as the letters “BSM”.

Automatic High Beam Indicator

Highlander High Beam IndicatorDrivers with automatic high beams will know when their automatic high beam system is activated with this light. It’ll look like a headlight with lines coming out of it and the word “AUTO” underneath.
